Aseptic packaging

This article is mainly focused on aseptic packaging, materials of construction, role of packaging and aseptic packaging technology.

Aseptic packaging

Packaging type according to packaging classification is semi rigid packaging. Packaging technology involved is aseptic packaging technology.

Materials of construction

The pouch is an aseptic carton here.

This consists of 6 layers.

Starting from the outermost layer,

1) Polyethylene

2) Paper board

3) Polyethylene

4) Aluminum foil

5) Polyethylene (adhesion)

6) Polyethylene

Role of packaging

  • Polyethylene layer

Holds and seals the packaging. Provides outside to outside sealing capability. Since it is moisture proof the print is protected. Protects the print and paper. Allows the pack to be used in a wet environment. Ability to see through due to which the print is visible.

  • Paper board

Provides structural stability and strength. Printable.

  • Polyethylene layer

Paper board and Al foil is bound together.

Polyethylene melt is extruded between the paper board and the Al foil followed by pressing → extrusion lamination. Due to the sticky nature of the polyethylene it anchors paper board and Al foil.

  • Aluminum foil

Good barrier for oxygen, moisture, flavour and light.

  • Polyethylene layer

Adhesion between Aluminum and inner polyethylene layer.

  • Polyethylene layer

High sealing ability. The container has to be leak proof. Should be able to hermetically seal the product. Highly neutral in nature. This grade of polyethylene is such a grade that it will not alter the organoleptics of the product.

Aseptic packaging technology

Pre-sterilized food is filled into a pre-sterilized packaging material and then sealed in an aseptic environment.

The product packed in this way is known to be aseptically packed.

The product is then released to the normal environment and the aseptic nature of the product will remain until the pack is opened.

Shelf life is increased compared to other types of packs.

But less-longer shelf life compared to metal cans.

As this is not subjected to harsh temperature conditions as in canning, nutrient retention is fairly high.

Light weight.

Conclusion

This article was mainly focused on aseptic packaging, materials of construction, role of packaging and aseptic packaging technology.
